Correspondences
The Letter Form
Nun has two forms: the bent Nun (נ) within words, crouching and receptive, and the straight Nun (ן) at the end of words, vertical and final. The fish lives beneath the surface of what is visible — it inhabits the depths that the conscious mind cannot see directly. The Death card (Nun) does not depict destruction but transition: the great fish beneath the surface of events, the current of change that was flowing long before it became visible.
In the Sefer Yetzirah
Scorpio — the fixed water sign, the sign of depth, transformation, and the crossing of thresholds. The Death card (Scorpio) is not about dying but about the intelligence of transition — the fish that swims through the boundary between worlds. The Imaginative Intelligence of Nun names the faculty that can hold the image of what has not yet become visible: the seed-form of transformation already underway beneath the surface.
Meditative Use
Nun governs Touch — the most immediate and unavoidable sense, the one that cannot be maintained at a distance. You cannot touch without being touched. Death is not a concept in Nun's teaching; it is an immediate tactile reality. The meditation of Nun is on impermanence: pick up an object and feel that it will not always be in your hands. Feel, in the moment of holding, the full weight of its temporariness. That feeling — neither panic nor denial — is Nun's gift.
