The Letter Form
Vav is the simplest letter: a single vertical stroke with a small head — a nail. The nail is what fastens things together: what joins the horizontal to the vertical, the earthly to the divine. The Hierophant is the great nail in the architecture of tradition — the pivot point between heaven and earth, the vertical axis made institutional. Six (the number of Vav) is the number of Tiphareth, the heart of the Tree.
In the Sefer Yetzirah
The second of the Simple Letters, governing Hearing and attributed to Taurus. Taurus is fixed earth — the stable, persistent, pleasure-receiving energy that builds and sustains rather than initiates. The Hierophant carries Taurus energy: the consistent guardian of what has been transmitted. Vav is the linking letter — it serves as the conjunction 'and' in Hebrew, the connective tissue of language. The Hierophant is the 'and' of spiritual tradition.
Meditative Use
Vav governs Hearing. Its meditation is the practice of listening before responding — feeling the nail's function of holding things in right relation by not rushing to speak. The Hierophant invites you to listen for the continuity beneath the surface: What is the tradition beneath the institution? What understanding was present before the doctrine was formalized? Hear for the living teaching within the dead letter.
