Leo
Fixed Fire · The Lion · The Sun's Own Throne
Leo rules the height of summer — the days when the sun seems to hesitate at its zenith, reluctant to begin its descent. This is fixed fire: not the explosive ignition of Aries nor the wandering flame of Sagittarius, but the sustained, radiant blaze of the heart burning at full strength. Leo teaches that to shine is not vanity — it is the fundamental act of solar existence. Every center of light casts warmth outward by nature.

The Nature of Leo
The Solar Identity
Leo is the only sign ruled by the Sun, and this singularity reveals something important: solar consciousness — the capacity to radiate from a stable center, to be the source of light rather than merely the reflector — is not common, and not easily sustained. Every other sign has a planetary ruler that also rules another sign; Leo stands alone. The Sun rules only Leo, just as there is only one Sun in our solar system.
This explains Leo's essential quality: a deep, sometimes fierce need to express its individual nature — not for approval, but because non-expression feels like a kind of death. The fire of Leo is not merely warmth; it is identity itself, the divine name that each soul carries as its essential frequency. When Leo learns to shine not for the approval of others but as an expression of what it fundamentally is, it becomes what it always was meant to be: a source of genuine warmth for those who gather around it.
Teth — The Serpent's Secret
Teth (ט) means serpent, and its association with Leo is initially surprising. But the serpent in its positive aspect is not the deceiver — it is the bearer of the secret fire, the Kundalini energy that rises through the spine (which Leo rules). Path 19 (Chesed to Geburah) is the Intelligence of the Secret of Spiritual Activities: the path on which the expansive mercy of Chesed encounters the purifying severity of Geburah across the horizontal axis of the ethical triad.
The Tarot trump Strength shows a woman gently closing the lion's jaws — mastery through love and inner authority rather than through external force. This is the deepest teaching of Leo: true power is not dominance but the capacity to hold and direct the inner fire without being burned by it. The serpent-energy of Teth, rising up the spine that Leo rules, is precisely this inner fire made conscious and controlled.
