Vav is the simplest letter: a single vertical stroke with a small head — a nail. The nail is what fastens things together: what joins the horizontal to the vertical, the earthly to the divine. Six (the number of Vav) is the number of Tiphareth, the heart of the Tree.

The second of the Simple Letters, governing Hearing and attributed to Taurus. Taurus is fixed earth — the stable, persistent, pleasure-receiving energy that builds and sustains rather than initiates. The Hierophant carries Taurus energy: the consistent guardian of what has been transmitted. Vav is the linking letter — it serves as the conjunction 'and' in Hebrew, the connective tissue of language. The Hierophant is the 'and' of spiritual tradition.
